Shade Cloth

Delachaise Community Gardens has decided to leave our green houses up throughout the summer. Good idea? We'll find out. But in the meantime it seems prudent to put up some shade cloth to lower the sweltering temperature in the green houses. We used white 50% shade cloth. This means that it blocks 50% of the sun's rays and inso doing lowers the temperature in the green houses. The shade cloth cost ALOT. Was it worth it? We'll see.

DCG Inaugural Neighborhood Market

















                                                  
Delachaise Community Gardens inaugural market was a resounding success!!! Thanks and praises to all of those who helped to make it possible (special thanks to Raymond, BJ, Osiris, Bernadette, Walter, Lolita, and Steve). We had about 35 patrons from around the neighborhood. Everyone was pleasantly surprised at the high quality, fresh, organic produce we provided at the CHEAPEST prices in town (sorry Wal-Mart!!). We also sold home-made french bread and meat pies. If there is anyone out there who would like to sell some BBQ at the market, please contact Joel at 504-344-9474.

Compost Tea

Compost tea is extremely beneficial to plant and soil health and effectively substitutes numerous chemical-based fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides. To brew our compost tea did a few simple steps. 1) We cut the top off of a 55-gallon drum 2) We filled a burlap feed sack with worm castings and compost 3) We suspended the burlap sack filled with compost in the 55-gallon drum and filled it with water 4) We let the 'tea bag' steep for a week while stirring it as often as possible (stirring the mixture helps to aerate it, fueling he aerobic bacteria).

When the tea was finally ready we applied it to the plants both through the roots and thorough the leaves for maximum benefits.

DCG Compost Pit

Our compost pit is two-staged. As you can see our first stage is on the left and is further decomposed and the newer compost is on the right. We collect organic matter from local restaurants and neighbors. Compost is the result of organic matter, water, bugs, bacteria, air and time. It can be mixed in with the soil and provides a rich source of vital nutrients and a source of beneficial bacteria for plants.
